MLS Town Planning Report
This report has included the input of various discussions with officials of Afesis-Corplan, the project team and research into the subject of emergency settlement, incremental settlement and formal town planning options. Due to the nature of the project as a hypothetical case study, specific references to real places, properties or communities have been avoided. No references are therefore made to any identifying aspects of the land or hypothetical community involved.

UNHCR Handbook for Emergencies
Answering people’s urgent need for protection and humanitarian assistance anywhere in the world has been an essential part of UNHCR’s work for the past three decades. Refugees and others fleeing conflict need help as quickly as possible, requiring a strong institutional commitment to emergency preparedness and response. The international community and public opinion expect aid workers to be on the scene and take action — and to do so swiftly.
Transitional Settlement - Displaced Populations
This book is published for co-ordinators and specialists working in humanitarian relief who are concerned with the transitional settlement needs of displaced people and their hosts. The guidelines in it offer a common planning tool for developing and implementing settlement and shelter strategies for people affected by conflict or natural disaster. They are intended primarily to help specialists to communicate with each other and understand one another. Other readers may also find them useful, because many aspects of transitional settlement work are relevant to policy making for displaced populations in general.
Temporary Human Settlement Planning for Displaced Populations in Emergencies
The growth in complex emergencies in the North since the demise of the cold war continues to challenge the traditional conceptualisation of relief assistance. Emergencies and the need for temporary settlements are not new, but on humanitarian grounds, large scale complex emergencies are increasingly demanding a revision of the accepted mode of practice of providing for DP (displaced population) human settlement needs.
Fire Safety Regulations
As more and more people congregate closer and closer together in settlements as urbanisation increases, risks associated with fire increase. In the case of more formal settlements, the National Building Regulations, SABS 0400-1990 Part T, first published in 1987, control fire safety in buildings, considerably limiting the incidence and spread of fires in formal areas, as well as the damage caused by fires.
